These days everyone is looking for ways to save some money considering the constantly decreasing consumer’s purchasing power. Fortunately, for your pocket and the planet, the easiest way to save money in the laundry room is to make your own laundry detergent.

Using homemade laundry detergent will not only help you save money but will aid the environment by avoiding the toxic chemicals and noxious scents found in store-bought brands.

Laundry detergent ingredients cause a variety of health risks to humans, ranging from relatively minor skin irritations to severe health problems including cancer, poisoning and neurological issues. Apart from affecting personal health, the harsh chemicals used in commercial detergents cause public and environmental health concerns as they can go into the air, down the drain and into bodies of water, too.

Making your very own detergent is extremely easy and only takes about 10 or 15 minutes. So, without further ado, let’s dig in.

Recipe #1: Liquid Detergent

Ingredients:

  • Warm water
  • 2 cups grated bar soap
  • 2 cups Borax
  • 2 cups washing soda

Directions:

  • Add the grated bar soap into a pot of boiling water, lower the heat & stir until melted.
  • Pour the prepared liquid soap into a bucket and gradually add Borax & washing soda.
  • Add about 7.5 liters of water and stir well.

Now cover and store the detergent. Use half a cup per load. The prepared detergent gels while sitting so you have to stir or shake the mixture before each use.
